Hey everybody! Hope you've had an awesome week! Lets do a quick recap and jump right into today posts. If you've just joined in on the sew along....Welcome! This is an awesome sew along sponsored by McCalls and Simplicity patterns. It started back on March 5 and you click here to read all the details about it. I do want to encourage you not to be intimated by the progress of other makers, there is still plenty of time to participate and create a beautiful dress.
Last week, I uploaded a sew-along video for sewing the complete bodice of Butterick 5850 View A&B. If you missed it, you can check it out here! This is Week 5 of the Royal Wedding Sew Along and today we're moving on to sewing and attaching our skirt to the bodice! I'm so excited because after these couple of steps, our dress will take shape and that so much fun to see!
I'll be starting on step 33 on the pattern instructions and ending at 38. Lets get started!
Step 33: You should have cut 4 skirt front and back pieces. Stitch 2 pieces together RIGHT sides together along center for the front and the remaining 2 pieces together for the back along the center as well.
Once you have everything sewn go ahead and press your seams open.
Step 35: GATHER upper edges of skirt to within 3/8" of the side opening. GATHER: stitch along seamallowance and again 1/4" away in seam allowance, using long machine stitches. Pull threads ends to adjust fit.
If you have a gathering foot, here's a time to pull it out and use it. If not, simply creating gathers with your machine and pull your threads to fit. Below is a photo of my gathering foot.
I love this foot. You can see below what it does while sewing.
After you have gathered the upper edge of your skirt, it should look similar to this.
Step 38: With RIGHT sides together, pin the skirt to the bodice, matching all your markings. Adjust gathers, baste and stitch together. Stitch again 1/4" away in the seam allowance and trim close to second stitching.
Press seam up toward bodice.
Once its stitched and pressed, you now have your bodice and skirt attached!!!!
We are down to the last few steps before our dress is completely finished! Next week, will be all about inserting our zipper!
If you are following along creating a dress for the challenge and have not joined the Facebook group, click here to join! I can't tell you how inspiring the group is with all the participants sharing their fabric choices, and progress pictures. Also be sure to use #royalweddingsewalong when you're posting to social so we all can see.
Thanks for stopping in for Week 5 of the sew along. Until next time...
