Hey hey hey!! Happy Tuesday!! I hope your week has started off great!! I did all of NOTHING on Sunday!! LOL!! And I loved it!! I thought I was going to get some sewing done, but doing nothing just felt right! I finished up this skirt Saturday, and....well let me not get ahead of myself....I'll start at the beginning!!
I have been seeing a lot of wide legged culottes (in fact Vogue 9091 is exactly the design I've been seeing) but you all know, I'm a skirt kinda of girl. So I bought Vogue 9090 hoping I could get a similar look. I did have concerns because of the pleats and not wanting to add more fullness to my hips. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the results and I think the amount of pleats are just enough!
I used a chambray denim I found in Joann to make this skirt. The skirt really came together quickly. Two things I suggest while sewing....
- Double check your measurements. Before installing the zipper, I wrapped the skirt around me, and would you believe, I had to cut about 8" off of this skirt!! UGH!! So I took out the pleats, cut 2" from the center front seam (4" total) and 2" from each side of the center back. Re-marked pleats, and this time when I tried it on, it fit perfect!! (I must've cut that pattern out half sleep LOL!! thats the only explanation I have!! )
- Buy a longer zipper. The pattern calls for 7" zipper. If you are fuller on the bottom like I am, you'll have to do a bit of shimming to get it up!! Had I known, I would've went with a 12'' to make it easier.
Knowing the waistband was wide, I decided to add 4 belt loops to it, so it wouldn't look like a cummerbund and make whatever belt I decided to wear stay in place. To do this, I took a piece of scrap fabric about 1"x20", and folded it like bias tape. Stitched the side down, and then put a row of stitching down the other side. Cut 4 equal strips, and sewed them on.
The top is made from a seersucker striped fabric from Joann. I used the popular McCalls 7542 View E for this skirt. Everybody loves this top, so much McCalls just did a contest for it, and my sew sister Candice won!! Loved her denim version of the top!!
Thanks for stopping by today!! Be sure to check out the latest Sew With Me video on my channel!! I'm installing a side seam zipper with POCKETS!!
