Plaid Wrap Skirt: McCalls 7813
Hey everybody! Happy Wednesday! I know I know, its a little too soon for turtlenecks and thigh high boots, but I honestly couldn’t see styling this skirt any other way! LOL! So, I braved the 90 degree heat to take photos, and I’m so glad I did! This is one of my favorite me-made looks ever! Lets chat about the turtleneck first!
I’m still on my “make more staples” kick, and a black turtleneck is high on the wardrobe essentials list, so I had to make one! I used Mimi G “Georgia” Turtleneck PDF pattern and this is my second time making it. It sews up really quick and easy! The first was in a purple Ponte with the sleeve ruffle, this time is used an AMAZING Rib Knit from Fabric.com. I love this fabric so much and I really need to order some more before its all sold out! You can see it more in my recent Fabric Haul video.
For the skirt, I used McCalls 7813 View D! I love the model look on this pattern, so this is my shameless copy of it! LOL! I came across the exact Rayon Twill fabric on Fabric.com, so I knew then it was meant to be!!! This skirts sews up really quick and if you use a solid fabric, you can have it done in no time!
For size I cut the 18 for the waist and merged over to the 20 for the hips. I think the skirt fits great, I love the hem and drape the fabric has but I have to be honest, I will not make this again. The pattern is great, drafted well, and the instructions are really easy to follow, so this is personal preference! I like my skirts/dresses to stay closed, and this skirt did not do that. I showed THIGH stepping out my door to take pics!! LOL!! After realizing, it was not going to stay closed, I added pins to hold the front in place!
The pattern calls for a snap closure around the waist of the skirt. If you love this skirt and want to make it, BUT you also want your skirt to stay closed, I’ll recommend adding 3-4 more snaps. If you don’t want to add more snaps but still want to be covered in case a gust of wind comes by, I’ll recommend pairing it over some leggings/tights.
Overall, I love this look, but I will be putting this pattern to the side. There’s more than enough skirt patterns available that give me the look and coverage I want. Glad I made this one though, because it got me back to my Sew In 30 videos. I LOVE making those videos, and I think that is the direction I want to continue taking my Youtube Channel in! I love my Sew With Me videos, but I feel the Sew In 30 series encourages and inspires the sewing community more. You can watch the series for this McCalls skirt here!
Also before I say bye for today, I have to share some fun news! For those of you that don’t know, we are a military family, and moving every 3-4 years is what we do! I’ve really enjoyed my time back on the East Coast but in a couple months, we’ll be heading back to the West! But before I pack up, I decided (with the push from some amazing followers) to have a Meet & Greet! I’m super nervous but so excited to meet some of my supporters!
