green skirt: mccalls 8480

Hi friends! Happy Easter! I hope you all are doing well today! My family and I got up this morning and went to church to worship. It was a beautiful service and reminder to why I believe, and love Jesus Christ!

Today, I am finally sharing a new skirt that I made a couple weeks ago using McCall’s M8480! This is a new pattern from the McCall’s Early Spring collection. I think this was a great project to kick off my spring sewing for this season. This was actually a work project for me. For those of you that don’t know, I work for Simplicity and sometimes I get tasked to create sew along videos for some of the patterns with QR codes on them. This was one of those patterns.

At first glance, I thought this was going to be a skirt that I would want to make and keep but upon further inspection, I noticed the seam lines and detailing on the skirt and knew it probably wouldn’t work for me. I talk more about why later in the post but once I decided I was not going to be keep it and sewing it solely for work, I went ahead and made View A. No sense in sewing extra yardage if I just needed to make the sew along for it.

Let’s get into the details….

the details

Pattern Used: I used McCall’s M8480 for this skirt.

Pattern Description: Fly front skirts have seaming details, back yoke, pockets and length variations. View C skirt has high-low hem. (description from Simplicity website)

Pattern Sewing Level: This pattern is rated Average.

What size did you cut?: I cut size 20 and made no adjustments to the pattern.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. They were great. I had no issues with the instructions or the illustrations in this pattern.

What did you like or dislike about the pattern? I think this is a really cute skirt and a great alternative to a traditional denim skirt. I don’t have any dislikes but from a personal preference point of view, this type of skirt with seam lines curving around the hips adds fullness to my already full hips and I’m not a fan of that for my figure. Now maybe the longer length option and a different fabric with drape may achieve a different look but I’m not really interested in making it again to find out to be honest. Still a great skirt, just not for me and my style.

Now even though I say all that of, I still want to give M8292 a try LOL. Stay tuned to see if I like those pants or not.

Did you make any pattern adjustments: I did not make any adjustments to the skirt. If this was a skirt that I really wanted for myself, I would’ve adjusted the back pattern piece to account for the rise that my bottom causes the back hem of the skirt. But again this was just a project for work so I passed on making adjustments. I will donate it now or give it to family member.

Where did you purchase the fabric(s)? I used a Twill for this skirt. We had this fabric and a few other colors at Melanated Fabrics but it is sold out now.

Did you record a sew along for this pattern? Yes, I did. You can watch the sew along here. Again I made View A but the instructions are the same for all views on the pattern.

Would you sew it again? Nah. I think its’ a cute skirt but again, I don’t think it flatters my figure adding volume to my hips so I probably won’t make it again.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes. The pattern is great, and this may be a great style for you, so I do recommend it.

Well that is all for today friends. Thank you all so much for stopping by the my blog today! Until next time…

Blessings,
