5 most used sewing tools

Hi friends! I took a long break from the blog but I’m back! I’m really hoping for more consistency here so what better way to get going other than just starting! Today I’m sharing my top 5 most used sewing tools! These are the tools that I reach for “every single time” I get ready to sew. I know you may be thinking, where is the ruler, seam gauge, measuring tape etc. While I have those tools, I don’t use them every time I sew something BUT I’d love to know what you use every time you sew! So let me know in the comments your top 5 most used tools! Lets get into the post…

shears, rotary cutter, snips

These are a no brainer for sewing right? You’re probably using 1 if not all of these tools. I usually use all 3 every time I’m sewing. My go to cutting tool is my rotary cutter and I have several! I love a rotary cutter over shears. I find that I get cleaner cuts and that I cut faster. I even have a rotary cutter for cutting out paper. When I do have to reach for my shears I use my LDH shears! I have two pairs but my favorite are the Prism Shears! I just love the color! They are so cute and they have my name on them!

Much like my rotary cutters, I have several snips also. I have them one at my sewing machine, serger, and iron.

  1. LDH Shears (Prism Shears, Midnight Black)

  2. Rotary Cutter (Olaf, LDH Rotary Cutter)

  3. Snippers (option 1, option 2)

pattern weights & seam rippers

You can use anything for pattern weights but I love to use large washers from Lowes. These come in a pack or you can buy them as singles. Again, you can use anything to hold down you patterns (candles, books, cans of soup). Use what you have for weights.

  1. Large Washers

Go ahead and buy seam rippers in bulk LOL! I have so many and plan to buy more the next time I’m in the craft store. They are a must when you are sewing. Let me know in the comments how many seam rippers you have!

  1. Seam Rippers (option 1, option 2)

pins & clips

Pins and wonder clips! You just gotta have them! Of course I reach for my pins more than wonder clips but every now and then a project comes up when I need clips instead of pins so I do recommend having at least one pack of clips. For pins, my go to pins are the Yellow Ball Quilting Pins. I do like to keep a pack of other pins on hand like silk fine pins, etc.

  1. Yellow Ball Pins

  2. Wonder Clips (option 1, option 2)

marking tools

Marking tools is another must right! We have to transfer all types of markings on patterns from circles, to squares, lines, triangles…….its a lot! I have several different types of marking tools and do suggest you have a variety as well. One marking tools can show up better on different fabrics and some just won’t work for certain types of fabric so having a couple options is best. Below are my favorites:

  1. Frixion Erasable Pens: I have these in several colors and I find that they disappear with heat. (note: on some fabrics the marks do return when the fabric cools)

  2. Dritz Air & Water Soluble Ink Marker: I think this is a common tool, and I do have 3-4 in my sewing room.

  3. Clover Chalk Roller: I love this thing. Easy to transfers, and you can buy refills when one chalk cartridge runs out.
