blue wool coat: simplicity 8797

Hey friends, happy Wednesday! Today I am sharing a coat that I started making almost 2 years ago! I loved this deadstock wool fabric when it first arrived at Melanated Fabrics and had to have it! The color is everything!!! I knew I wanted to make a simple oversized coat so I reach for Simplicity 8797! It’s a couple things that had this project waiting so long in to queue for me to finish so…let’s get into it.

the details

Pattern Used: I used Simplicity 8797 for this coat.

Pattern Description: With its classic lapels and easy fit, this lined Misses' coat has the look of a comfortable oversized coat. The coat features four lengths and a one-button closure. *description from Simplicity website

Pattern Sewing Level: This pattern level is rated Average.

What size did you cut?: I cut the size XL for this pattern.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes! The instructions were easy to follow. I didn’t have any issues with the illustrations either.

What did you like or dislike about the pattern? I love the oversized fit of this pattern. I also love that it does not have a center back seam so if you have a plaid fabric, this pattern will be great because it eliminates the need to match lines up there.

Did you make any pattern alterations: No, I did not make any adjustments to this pattern.

Now, for the reason it took so long in the queue. I started this coat in 2021. I stitched the main fabric and lining but put it to the side before attaching them. In 2022, I actually finished it and did a whole dance in it on IG but then I noticed I did not like the way the hem was falling. I stitched it by hand but noticed the main fabric did a weird bend to the inside like the lining was pulling it along the front. So I took that hem out and hung it up.

Fast forward to earlier this week, I reached for the coat again and played around with the hem a bit more, even watched a few YT videos to see what the issue was. It still pulls a little but not like it was at first. I stabilized it and I think that helped some, but now I’m on a mission to figure that out, because I don’t want my coat hem to bend or pull. I want my hems to lay flat. If you have some tips, let me know in the comments.

Also, I wish I would’ve added a bound buttonhole to this. By the time I thought of it (which was this week), I have zero scrap fabric remaining lol!

Where did you purchase the fabric(s)? My fabric is a Deadstock Wool from Melanated Fabrics. Here are some other options here.

Did you record a sew along for this pattern? No, I did not film a sew along for this pattern.

Would you sew it again? Maybe. I would make it in a Sherpa but I don’t need it in wool again.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes.

Well, that is all for my post today. Thank you all so much for stopping by the my blog today! Until next time…

Blessings,
