cotton tiered gathered dress: simplicity 9702

Hi friends. Back with a new project and I finished just in time to wear for Mother’s Day. This is a repeat pattern (S9702) for me and I’m so happy I made it again. The first dress I rarely wear because I didn't adjust the neckline (see it here) but I did adjust it for this dress and I love it. Let’s get into the details…

the details

Pattern Used: I used Simplicity S9702 and made View C on the pattern. This pattern sewing level is Average.

What size did you cut? I cut the size 18 on this pattern.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, the instructions and illustrations were easy to follow.

How long did it take you to complete the project, from cutting to final stitch? It took me 4 days from cutting to final stitch. The first day was all cutting. Second day, I completed all of the bodice including the sleeves. On the third day, I did the first and second tier. Final day I attached the last tier, stitched the hem and I also photographed right after. This could have been down in less than 4 days but y’all know I like to make small progress.

What did you like or dislike about the pattern? No real dislikes other than my own disdain for multiple tiers of gathers lol. I love the sleeve options on this dress. I thought about doing the sleeves on View A but changed my mind. I’ll probably make it again with those sleeves.

Did you make any pattern alterations? Yes. I made this dress before here. I noted in that post that the V neck was a little too low for me. So for this dress, I did the adjustment that I showed in that post and raise it up 2 inches. I was asked to film a video of this adjustment so be sure to subscribe to my channel and stay tuned for it.

Where did you purchase the fabric(s)? Target. You read that right. This is a cotton queen bedsheet set. Since my local Joann has closed, I haven’t ordered fabric online yet, but wanted something new. I decided to get a sheet set and I love it. I will definitely get more solid, and stripes sheet sets. I have the entire fitted set leftover so I think I can get a top out of that.

Did you make a muslin or toile first? Why or why not? I did not make a muslin for this dress. It’s a pretty loose fitting dress so I wasn’t worried about getting my waist or hips fitted. My only concern was my bust so I cut the 18 which give me a 45” finished bust measurement. My bust measures 43” so I have 2” of extra room which is perfect for me.

Did you record a sew along for this pattern? No. I did not film a sew along for this pattern.

Would you sew it again? Yes. I would sew this dress again. I feel amazing in it! I can wear this with heels, or sandals all spring and summer long.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes. If you love a pull on dress with gathers and tiers, you’ll love this.

Well, thats all for today friends. Thank you for stopping by my blog today! Until next time…

Blessings
